10 THINGS TO DO LABOR DAY WEEKEND THAT WILL GET YOU OUTDOORS AND HAVING FUN

Who doesn’t want S’more summer? Whether you are relaxing by the hotel pool or up early to get in a good hike, summer is a great time to get away. So plan now for the last weekend of summer: the 3 day long Labor Day holiday and send summer off with a vacation full of outdoor activities and much needed together time. Our list of top 10 things to do will have you outside enjoying the fresh air, sunny days and warm nights.

From Sequoia National Park to a Taco Tour, these ideas are perfect for the long holiday weekend whether you’re traveling solo, with just the two of you, or with a group, we will help fuel your wanderlust!

1. Take the self-guided historic walking tour: Visalia Then and Now  to learn about our rich history. See the old jail where Dalton and his partner escaped! Marvel at the newly opened Darling Hotel, an abandoned building that has been given new life as a luxurious, boutique hotel, preserving its Art Deco roots. Take the Mural Guide along with you as you walk through downtown. You will see many concrete canvases adorned with murals depicting the nearby national parks and our agricultural heritage.

2.  Go fishing at Mooney Grove Park. This is the perfect place to teach young children to fish. The stocked lagoon offers pretty good odds for hooking one! There is plenty of grass to run around on if the fisherman needs a break. Lay out your blanket and have a picnic under the canopy of the oak trees.

3.  All ages will love a trip to Adventure Park, where the newly opened Sequoia Springs Splash Park will offer hours of good, clean (and wet) fun! And if the 4 slides and over 100 water features don’t keep you cool, the 900-gallon water bucket that dumps down definitely will.

4.  Go for a bike ride. Rent bikes or bring your own and take a ride along the St Johns River Parkway. This paved pathway goes for miles, crossing under streets for a safe cycle.

5.  Let’s Taco ‘bout it. Take our self-guided walking Taco Tour and discover the best tacos in Visalia. From the Mexican states of Colima or Michoacan, whether they are crispy tacos or soft, you’ll get a chance to taste the Latin inspired flavors of one of California’s most popular snacks.

6. Spend the afternoon on Lake Kaweah and get the therapeutic benefits of life on the water. Rent a patio boat, pack a cooler and grab your swimsuit for a leisurely day bobbing, swimming and fishing on the water.

7. Take a trail ride in the foothills of Sequoia National Park with Riata Ranch through lush deer trails, and along the rushing waters of the North Fork of the Kaweah River. Explore the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range and its rolling foothills.

8.  Take in the view from Beetle Rock and follow the nearby Big Trees trail through the giant sequoia grove. Feeling a little more adventurous? Climb to the top of Moro Rock for a panoramic view of the Great Western Divide.

9.  Hike to Tokopah Falls, a 1,200-foot cascading waterfall. This is a relatively easy 4-mile out and back hike that will reward you with the falls and offers a few places along the river to take a cooling dip.

10. Take a drive into Kings Canyon. For social distancing, this is the perfect destination. One of the most amazing locations in the park, is also one of the least frequented. The drive into the canyon culminates at Road’s End. Follow along the mighty King’s River as it heads down into one of the deepest canyons in North America.

This weekend getaway will have you craving s’more summer – so why not toast some marshmallows and make that epitome of summertime desserts: the iconic S’more. And while it may seem like a long time until summer rolls around again, you will have the memories of this weekend getaway and time spent together to get you through winter.
