Buffalo Soldiers Day Celebration

To celebrate Buffalo Soldiers Day, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks have special events planned.

Saturday, July 27 at 8:30 pm - Lodgepole Ampitheater

Historian and author Biran G Shellum (Charles Young and the Ninth Cavalry at Sequoia, 1903-1904)  will uncover the history of the Buffalo Soldiers in Sequoia National Park. Presentation takes place at Lodgepole Campground Ampitheater and will last 45 minutes. 

Sunday, July 28 at 10:00 am Giant Forest Auto Log Parking Area (Fee Free entry to the national parks on Sunday)

Featured Event: A ceremony to honor the posthumous promotion of Charles Young, the first Black superintendent of a national park (Sequoia National Park), to Brigadier General.
(Requires short shuttle ride (free) from the Giant Forest Museum.

Throughout the Day:

Ranger-led programs and services such as interpretive talkds, guided walks, site interpretation, interactive booths, and evening programs will be available parkwide.

ABOUT BUFFALO SOLDIERS:

Congress designated July 28 as Buffalo Soldiers Day to commemorate the formation of the first Army regiments comprised of Black soldiers following the Civil War in 1866. Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks have designated this day as a fee-free day. Enjoy the special events and programs in celebration.
